Targeting the Extreme Poor

“I clear people’s land for about 35,000 kip per day – and work 10 – 20 days a year. We use nearly all my income to buy rice, salt, and MSG. This is mainly what we eat.”

“My daughter would love to study – but she must help me with the house, and on our land. School is a luxury that poor people cannot afford.”

“I am poor because I don’t have anyone to support me. I live alone in this thatched hut that will blow away in the rains. I collect mushrooms, frogs, and vegetables from the forest to survive.”

“We need to buy rice for 8 months of the year, and we cannot afford it…so we have to borrow, and go into debt. This is what keeps us poor.”
