“My name is Sounthon, and I am 36 years old. I was born in Champasak province, and moved to this village after I got married. My wife’s family is from here. I studied until Grade 2, but had to stop so that I could help my parents cultivate their half hectare of upland rice fields. It is very difficult to grow rice in the mountains, and they needed my labour so that we could have enough rice to feed my family. Even with my labour, we always had a rice shortage for at least 6 months.
