“In the past 3 months, I have struggled because I have not had enough rice to eat as I have no land to harvest. I borrow rice from my neighbours but I need to pay this back at 300,000 kip (3.75 USD) per sack. One sack of rice only lasts us one week, because I have 5 children who are all growing and eat a lot. I make money by collecting and selling vegetables alongside the main road into town. I forage for bamboo shoots on other people’s land because there are none left in the forest, but I’m only allowed to collect these to consume in our family, not to sell. If I sell them, I must pay the landowners 50,000 kip (6.25 USD)per shoot.
